We may have come across many times where when drawing someone that it doesn't look like that person. It seems like something is missing or something is completely off. " Could it be the facial features are not the right size?" " Maybe they aren't the right shape?" Drawing likeness is actually very hard because it requires many elements of other fundamentals to team together to create something that resembles the person you are trying to draw. Even if you don't draw real people into your style, you can still use the skills to make diverse faces and bodies. So what exactly makes faces and bodies unique from person to person? The easy answer and obvious one: Sizing, shapes of face/body, spacing, and of course colors. However, the thing that is often missed despite the importance of making things even, faces have a lot of slight unevenness. It's rarer for someone's face to not be uneven than for it to have unevenness. Sometimes they can be obvious in someone's face ![]() Some are harder to spot than others... How would we go about breaking down a face to understand it better? For starters, find references of front view, 3/4 view, and side view of the person of choice. Let's start with the easy stuff. Kim Tae-ri has eyes that have a slight lid, her nose is very round, her lips are small but full, and her face is square-like. Even with that information, it's still not enough to draw that likeness she has to her face. You will have to look into it with more observation and gather details about her face quirks. Let's start with basic spacing and positioning of her facial features.Using basic shapes we can easily map out the distance. Take this method for example how to do it: Using that method, for the eye-nose we will use the base pupil and just below the tip of the nose as markers. And now, let's look at her shapes more closely. The most important facial feature that the human brain places importance on, is the eyes. We should break down the basic quirks of the eyes' shape. *Key importance info: Keep note on how the shadow lays on parts of the face as they show how deep or hooded that facial feature might be. Next AreaThe next area is the nose, something you should take into consideration is the point of the nose and how the nose lays above the mouth and bridge of the nose between the eyes. Based on what we see here, her nose has a slight point down on the tip of it. It's why we don't see her nostrils that much when she is looking at us from the front view too. Watch how the wings of the nose curve and how the Apex septum area is shaped and connects. And looking how much the nostrils show at that angle and how are they shaped. Make sure you are looking at each nostril has it's own shape because they can vary from one another. This applies to any part of the face too, look out for unevenness. With mouths, something you need to always check is how they look when smiling, open, and closed to give you a full idea on what is exactly is going on in terms of shape and possible unevenness. For Kim Tae-ri's case, she has a slight unevenness to her upper lip on the left side. Say even if you don't draw lips in your work, you can still apply on how the opening of the mouth looks. So in this case if you were to draw her mouth into a simplified version it would still look like her mouth if you add that unevenness to it. Brows don't need to exact just have to follow the basic outline. ![]() Now looking at her chin and jaw She has a slight curve to her jaw line Comparing her chin to her mouth lines, you can see how people's mouth corners don't actually match another person's. Run downHow do you go about simplifying some of this info? Look for the main characteristics as mentioned before. That unevenness is just as important as spacing, proportions, placement, shading, and shapes. You should also look at how others use these key markers as ways to give their work that likeness.
