Proportion is an overlap fundamental between perspective and anatomy. You need to know proportions typically before you study anatomy. Keep in mind, you don't need to base it on heads measurement but it is important to pay attention where things rest at.

Look at real people and their proportions to see differences and consistencies MAKE NOTES. this fundie is easy so long as you get into the habit of learning how to take notes and apply them to your work. Everyone wants to design a character that looks great but also stands out on its own. Design is a lot of fundamentals and one that is not so simple: appeal. We often see good and bad designs in media all the time. You can look at some anime and see generic designs and at other times you will see designs that stand out entirely. Design is not something you get lucky with but something you put a lot of thought and effort into. It is not just about art but research and understanding. People who are bad at designing don't research things and also end up copying already existing designs.
What makes a good design?
If you need to, look up designs you think are good and see what exactly they are doing right. It's important to look at artists better than you and see what they are doing that you are not.
Silhouette Importance
A silhouette is supposed to convey what a character is supposed to be in either what they do for a living, personality, skills, or culture. It is about planning to convey what makes this character unique compared to other characters in that universe or within our own. Take a look at examples of people's work that shows the bare minimum and silhouettes of characters.

Once you are done answering those questions you need to think about three more things: Culture, the universe, and overall idea. You need to reference accordingly, finding images that match the type of thing you are going for. Make sure to have more than 10 images for the base of the design and five unique elements you want to add (over 15 references).
βIt's important to have more references and ideas to take from than to just have the same ten images for all of your characters. Expand and avoid having characters looking the same. If you want examples of characters who are family or from the same culture, look at Avatar the last Airbender. Lastly, reference different face and body shapes and avoid making similar faces. There are too many shapes for you not to use them, if you struggle with this then you need to look at different faces of people in a country and body types. I would also suggest following all of KNKL Design series as he is a professional in the industry and designs for games. He has a whole series on what he does for designing. And remember, your first few concepts will probably suck. Keep in mind, that getting a second opinion and critique on all stages will improve your design also.
There is a term you may have heard throughout the art community and maybe even math. There is a thing known as 3d dimension or 3d form. This is a major foundation within art and it is not so simple as drawing a cube but it becomes more of perspective and also understanding how to break things down. This differs from 2d shapes because nothing in real life is a 2d shape and what gives things life is 3d forms in which objects are in our everyday life.
So you might begin to question how a form is directly applied to art and why it is so important. Sure, people talk about it but it is like one of those things that you feel might be thrown around that makes no sense to you.

β Basics of Basics of FormHow to practice FormThe first thing you should know about form, it's fucking hard. There's no doubt it is probably one of the hardest things you will try to draw. It may not look like it at first but as you slowly learn to draw you realize it is really hard to learn in itself. So how do you learn it? Learning it you can use either traditional or digital, but for money wise, I would suggest digital if you had to pick but it doesn't matter too much. Peter Han, Kim Jung gi, and more people have classes or resources online but, they may not be free. Those are options for more detail and more quality resources if you feel that other stuff is not clicking for you. Keep in mind, that form follows perspective rules however, form is not perspective. Perspective is the rules an object follows or Perspective is the rules that dictate how forms appear and are drawn. This is the reason why form and perspective are slightly different from each other. In an image forms rarely ever appear from different perspectives instead, all the forms usually follow one cohesive perspective rule.
